Department of Antiquities

The Department of Antiquities is one of the oldest governmental departments and institutions of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It was established by an Emiral Decree issued by King Abdullah I (then Prince Abdullah bin Al-Hussein, Emir of the Emirate of Transjordan) on 27 June 1923.

The Department is the official authority responsible for the preserving, protecting, and safeguarding of Jordan’s cultural heritage, as well as interpreting and presenting it at the national and international levels.

The role of the Hashemites has been pivotal and foundational in the preservation and protection of cultural heritage. Antiquities have also constituted a core pillar of the economic modernization vision launched by His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein, may God protect him.
